BRADENTON, Fla.- No. 2 ranked State College of Florida softball split at home with Santa Fe College. Two home runs in the bottom of the sixth by freshmen starters Crystal Cyr and Kat Penn helped the Manatees regain the lead and hold on for the win.
Sophomore hurler, Paige Mathews faced 30 batters, struck out five and gave up two earned runs. SCF was up 2-0 in the sixth when an error allowed a 3-run triple by Santa Fe's Celeste Bradshaw. Mathews came back to force a ground out and a strike out looking to end the top of the sixth. SCF's comeback rally was sparked by an Ashley Burney lead-off walk. Freshman short stop, Crystal Cyr drove a 2-run home run over the right center fence to tie it up. With no one on, catcher Kat Penn stepped to the plate for a one out solo bomb to take the lead 5-4.
In game two, the Saints' Karla Claudio shut down the Manatee offense with nine Ks and only three hits. SCF lost the second game 2-0.
SCF hosts St. Johns' River State College on Thursday.
