SCF Softball Headlines 2012-13
COLORADO SPRINGS, Co- The National Junior College Athletic Association named the top academic athletes and academic teams for the 2012-2013 year. State College of Florida had five student-athletes earn Athlete of Distinction awards and three teams named NJCAA All-Academic Team.
TAMPA, Fla.- The State College of Florida Softball team was named the FCSAA Academic Team of the Year. SCF took this top honor by having a team grade point average of 3.39 calculated from 25 student-athletes total. The FCSAA Academic Team award is selected out of all teams from all sports within Region 8.

PLANT CITY, FL- SCF Softball split for the fourth consecutive conference double header. This time, the split came against current Suncoast Conference leaders, Hillsborough Community College. SCF won the first game 2-1 and lost game two 3-1.
AVON PARK, FL- SCF Softball evens their conference record at 4-4 with a split at South Florida State College. Taylor O'Quinn earned the win in game one with nine strikeouts in 6 innings of work for the 12-1 win. SCF had 17 hits in the mercy rule victory. Kat Penn and Chelsea Wildey both hit long home runs. The Manatees lost game two in extra innings 3-2. Megan Schwietert pitched six innings and O'Quinn returned to the mound for the second time.

MANATEE -- If getting thrown to the top of the rotation after the program's ace suffered a season-ending injury just last week wasn't enough, former Manatee High standout Taylor O'Quinn was called into double duty for the State College of Florida softball team in Tuesday's Suncoast Conference opener. The freshman obliged the home faithful with 15 combined strikeouts in two games that lifted SCF (27-9 overall, 2-0 conference) to a sweep, 4-0 and 7-4, over St. Petersburg College.
BRADENTON -- The pitchers weren't finding the strike zone, the defense was committing costly errors, and the bats were quiet. But despite suffering the end of a seven-game winning streak, the State College of Florida Manatees weren't finished Thursday. SCF might have dropped the opener 12-2 to visiting Tallahassee Community College, but the Manatees (25-9) made the adjustments needed for a turnaround in salvaging a split with the Eagles.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- State College of Florida’s Ashley Burney is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Player of the Week. Burney, a sophomore from Palatka, Fla., batted .500 (10-for-20) with five runs scored, two home runs (1.000 slugging percentage) and 13 RBI in six games during the voting period. She hit safely and drove in at least one run in each game of doubleheaders against Daytona State (March 5), Palm Beach State (March 7) and Illinois Valley (March 9). Burney’s top games came in game one against Daytona State, when she was 3-for-3 with a two RBI, and game two against Palm Beach State, when she was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBI. She capped the week with her first career grand slam in game one against Illinois Valley. For the week, Burney also recorded four doubles and drew three walks.
BRADENTON, Fla.- The State College of Florida softball team won both at home against Palm Beach State College. SCF won 7-1 in seven and 9-1 in five innings. Megan Schwietert earned both wins on the mound as the Manatees improved to (22-8) this season.
DAYTONA, Fla- SCF Softball swept the Daytona State College Falcons 6-2 and 9-4. Paige Mathews went the distance in game one and got the save behind freshman hurler, Megan Schwietert. The offensive attack was led by sophomore short stop, Chelsea Wildey. She was 5-for-8 with three doubles, a triple, six RBI and scored three times. Ashley Burney (4-for-7) and Megan Tice (3-for-7) added a combined 5 RBI for the Manatees.
BRADENTON, Fla.- SCF softball scored three runs in the first inning but it wasn't enough to hold off St. John's River State College. The Manatees lost game one 4-3 but came back to beat the Vikings in 5 innings, 9-1.
BRADENTON, Fla.- No. 2 ranked State College of Florida softball split at home with Santa Fe College. Two home runs in the bottom of the sixth by freshmen starters Crystal Cyr and Kat Penn helped the Manatees regain the lead and hold on for the win.
OCALA, Fla.- SCF Softball dropped two heart breakers at College of Central Florida. Both losses were decided by one run each. SCF lost 1-0 and 5-4.
BRADENTON, Fla.- The SCF Softball team is hosting the Manatee Twisters 03 2nd Annual "Pros vs Girls" charity softball game. The game will be held Sunday, February 17th at 4pm and will feature the Manatee Twisters against Jose Bautista and a long line of professional baseball players from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Blue Jays and Orioles organizations. There will be vendors, food, silent auction items and games in addition to the Pros vs. Girls game. All proceeds go toward the Manatee Twisters 03 and the Women's Resource Center.
GAINESVILLE, Fla.- SCF Softball swept the Santa Fe College Saints 3-2 and 2-1. Paige Mathews earned both wins for the Manatees and sophomore slugger Ashley Burney drove in the winning runs in both games of the double header.
